How to Choose the Best Planner for Moms

I tried a large variety of planners over the last few years, and I know picking the right planner makes all the difference. Having the right planner keeps your life organized, and if you buy the wrong one, it’ll end up on your shelf.

The first thing you have to do is decide what you want from your planner.

Do you want a place to organize your time and keep track of appointments? Do you want a place to set goals and keep track of your reading list?

Or, do you want a planner that also gives you a place to put your meals each day? Is there a place for your budget each paycheck?

Here are a few other suggestions to consider when reviewing the best mom planners.

Physical or Digital Planner

One of the first things you have to do is decide if you want a physical or digital planner.

Some people like pen and paper, keeping a written shopping list or a to-do sheet that stays in your purse. If you like to write out your bills on paper, then you know the physical planner is for you.

On the other hand, digital things are normal for today. If you prefer to keep to-do reminders on your computer or phone, a digital planner may be for you.

Size of the Planner

Think about what size planner you want. Do you want it to fit in your purse or do you prefer a desktop size calendar that fits on your desk or countertop?

Here are some planner sizes.

  • Pocket Planner: If you want to keep your planner with you at all times, a pocket sized planner fits into your purse. It’s a practical choice, keeping your planner nearby so you can write down notes or things you may need to add to lists.
  • Mid-Sized Planner: These planners are roughly the size of a half sheet of paper. They are portable and give you space to keep all of your tasks in track.
  • Large Planner: This size is the same as a full notebook, and they aren’t ideal for portability. If you want the best planner visually, generally this is the right size. It is ideal for visual people who need everything to stay organized.

Minimalist or Colorful

What style do you prefer? Some moms like something that is colorful, while others prefer a minimalistic design with few distractions.

Ideal Layout

I’ve tried several layouts; sometimes, it’s a trial and error. You might prefer a vertical layout or a horizontal layout.

Do you like time blocking or hourly planning? Weekly spreads often include monthly and weekly planning pages that spread across two pages.

Here are some of the layouts you might find in a planner.

  • Daily Pages: If you want space throughout the day to make sure you aren’t forgetting anything, daily pages are for you. Some daily pages are broken down by the hours, while others are blocks where you can write whatever you want.
  • Weekly Pages: If you like to make your plans one week at a time, a planner with your week at your glance is what you need. You can make a plan for the day or week in advance with this.
  • Monthly Pages: If you go the daily and weekly thing down, you only need some monthly pages. These pages track doctor appointments, birthdays, field trips, special events, and other monthly events.

Space Needed for Tracking Activities

How busy is your life? How many activities do you need to track each week? Do you prefer to track things by the hour or by the day?

This is important to consider when determining how much space you need to track everything.

Your Budget

Do you want to splurge on your planner or are you on a tight budget? Your budget often narrows down your choices since a lot of planners are in the premium price range.

However, if you don’t want to splurge on your planners, you don’t have to! There are plenty of budget-friendly mom planners available. Never spend more than you feel comfortable doing so.

Dated or Undated Planner For Mom

Something else you may debate is a dated or undated planner. Technically, one isn’t better than the other, so it all depends on your preferences.

Dated planners mean you don’t have to spend any extra time writing in the dates; it’s done for you. This is often a big perk for moms since we all lack time.

Undated planners require a few extra minutes to write the dates in yourself. However, it gives you more versatility.
