There’s nothing that compares to the fresh feeling of a baby’s soft skin. That’s why it’s so important to keep it healthy and protected so it stays this way for awhile.
The effects of the sun, harsh chemicals, and improper care can have damaging results on your baby’s skin as they grow. You want to be sure that you’re only exposing them to the safest products and keeping them far away from any skin damaging elements.
There are plenty of ways that you can keep your baby’s skin healthy, starting from day one. Follow these tips to help your infant’s skin stay super soft and kissable for years to come.
This post has been sponsored by Adorable Baby. However, it reflects my personal thoughts and opinions on the subject.
1. Use Only Natural Products on their Skin
Scientists are constantly learning more about the dangers of toxic chemical exposure to a baby’s developing bodies and brains. The use of products that contain dyes, fragrances, or perfumes may result in damage or side effects not only to your baby’s skin, but internally as it is absorbed into their bodies, as well.
There are many products that you will use on your baby throughout their first year of life. From shampoos and body wash to diaper creams and lotions, you want to make sure that you’re using the safest ingredients on your baby’s delicate skin.
Rest assured that Adorable Baby’s line of baby skin care contain only the safest ingredients for your child’s skin so you can use their products with confidence.
All of the ingredients are naturally sourced and derived, so you can feel safe with what you put on your baby’s skin.
Their products include shampoo and body wash, baby lotion, baby oil, baby sunscreen, baby balm, and diaper rash ointment. All are EWG verified and each ingredient maintains the best EWG rankings.
2. Keep Your Baby Protected From the Sun
A baby’s skin is very sensitive to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Make sure to always practice safe sun protection.
The powerful capabilities of SPF can have a huge benefit when it comes to protecting their body and skin from skin cancer, damage, and premature aging. That’s why sunscreen is so important during those early years and for the rest of their life.
Pediatricians recommend against using sunscreen for babies under 6 months old. Before this age, keep them out of the sun as much as possible. After 6 months, if your baby must be in the sun, using sunscreen is the best way to keep your infant safe.
AdorableBaby Sunscreen is a natural, mineral-based sunscreen that offers superior protection (SPF 30) without any dangerous chemicals. Ingredients like avocado oil and shea butter, in addition to zinc oxide, provide safe sun protection and skin moisturizing qualities at the same time.
Another perk of Adorable Baby’s sunscreen is that it is non-greasy and rubs in clear without giving their skin a white ghostly look, like many other mineral sunscreens on the market do. This sunscreen will be coming soon for purchase although it is not currently available.
Other ways to protect your baby from sun exposure are:
- Put a wide brimmed hat on your baby
- Avoid high noon hours when sun is strongest: 10am-2pm
- Keep all skin and body protected when possible by wearing a rash guard or full length swim suit with UPF index or use lightweight muslin blankets to cover them when exposed to the sun
- Keep your baby in the shade or under an umbrella or canopy
Remember, the sun comes out all year, including the colder winter months when it can still cause damage. Therefore, you want to keep your baby’s skin protected whenever they are outside by always using sunscreen.
3. Don’t Overdo Bath Time
Although your baby’s skin needs to stay clean, they don’t necessarily need a bath everyday. In fact, you only need to bathe your baby every 2-3 days.
Along with that, baby’s delicate skin can dry out from soaking in water for too long. Therefore, don’t keep your baby laying in a tub for longer than 10 minutes at a time.
Also, be sure to pat your baby completely dry before putting their diaper or clothes on.
When bathing, use only natural and safe bath time products, such as Adorable Baby’s Shampoo and Body Wash. Made from Shea, Jojoba, Baobab and other natural oils, their shampoo & body wash will leave your baby’s skin clean, soft, and hydrated.
Adorable Baby’s Shampoo and Body Wash uses hydrature, which is a proprietary blend of natural oils designed to moisturize your baby’s skin and promote its natural softness. In addition to this shampoo & bodywash’s cleansing properties, hydrature ensures that your baby’s skin remains soft, safe & healthy.
4. Change Baby’s Diaper Often
One of the most common skin issues that babies encounter are diaper rashes. Most rashes are triggered by enzymes in your baby’s poop, diaper friction, and wetness which can irritate sensitive skin.
Some babies with sensitive skin are more prone to irritation, rashes, redness, or bumps. Newborns can go through 10-12 diapers a day so be sure that you’re checking and changing them often to avoid possible irritation that a wet or dirty diaper can cause.
5. Treat Skin Issues Quickly
You may notice redness or bumps in your child’s diaper region if they’re sitting in a dirty diaper for too long or even just because their skin is prone to it.
Be sure to treat these issues as soon as you see them sprout up. If you wait too long, they will continue to get worse before getting better.
Using Adorable Baby’s natural diaper rash ointment can help to speed up the healing of your baby’s rash. This diaper cream uses zinc oxide to help heal and protect your baby’s bum from skin rash and irritation.
Made with beeswax and other oils, Adorable Baby’s diaper rash ointment provides a barrier on the skin against bacteria, supplies hydration, and soothes the skin. This formula is nice and thick but spreads easily and evenly.
6. Prevent Heat Rashes
Heat rash in babies are common as they can become overheated easily. It may appear as tiny red spots on the skin and is most noticeable in babies with a light skin tone.
Most often, hot and humid weather, oils, or other ointments can cause the sweat glands to become overworked or blocked, leading to a rash.
To prevent heat rashes from happening, keep their skin and body cool by dressing them appropriately for the weather with light, airy clothes when it’s hot. A cool bath or washcloth, small portable fan, and very light muslin blankets (when needed) can keep them cool.
Keep them covered by shade and practice the same safe sun habits as listed above to keep them cool and out of direct sunlight. Also, avoid using oil-based products when the temperature is very hot as these tend to further block sweat glands.
7. Battle Dry Skin with Moisturizers
Especially in the winter months, your baby’s skin may get dry and chapped. Using a moisturizing lotion or baby balm in those dry areas can keep your baby’s skin soft and hydrated.
You can incorporate a lotion massage into your daily routine. Babies love lotion massages and they have even been shown to reduce irritability and help them sleep better! Plus, they feel good for them and can provide great sensory input.
It’s also good practice to apply lotion right after bath time, as the wetness can dry out your baby’s skin.
Using Adorable Baby’s moisturizing lotion or baby balm can provide the added hydration that their skin needs to stay soft and protected. This lotion is a soothing formula that will keep your little one’s skin glowing and nurtured. It’s made with oils such as olive and jojoba to provide the skin with necessary vitamins and antioxidants.
Adorable Baby’s concentrated Baby Balm offers extra nourishment for your little one’s sensitive or dry areas. With ingredients like mango seed butter and sweet almond oil, the balm also provides vitamins and nourishment while protecting and soothing the skin.
8. Keep an Eye on Nail Growth
You may have noticed that your baby practically had claws when he came out of the womb! Baby’s nails grow so fast when they’re young and can cause damage to their skin.
With long nails and babies who haven’t fully understood how their body and limbs work yet, they may easily scratch themselves. To prevent cuts and scrapes on their soft, delicate skin, keep their nails trimmed as short as possible.
Be sure to cut their nails when needed using safe baby nail clippers. You can also use baby mittens during the first few weeks of life when they are still flailing their arms, in order to prevent scratches.
9. Keep Your Baby’s Scalp Moist
Cradle cap is a common and normal issue among most babies that can develop anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months old. Cradle cap appears as yellowish, flaky, greasy-looking patches around your baby’s scalp and the crown of their head.
It can also appear on the forehead, eyebrows, and around the ears. It may appear like a lot of your baby’s scalp (under their hair) is flaking off.
Although it’s common and not a bother to your baby, cradle cap can be a bit of an annoyance to parents. It leaves tiny flakes everywhere and you may be tempted to pick it off constantly.
To prevent or treat cradle cap, it’s best to apply some oil to the effected area. You can do this several times throughout your daily routine and even before bathing.
Use Adorable Baby’s Natural Baby Oil to keep the area moistened and prevent further irritation. This baby oil is also made with the signature Hydrature™ oil blend offering maximum levels of moisturization and absorbs well into the skin.
Once moistened, you can also use a small comb on the scalp to brush the flakes away.
Taking care of your baby’s skin should start from the early days of infancy. Keeping it moisturized, protected from the sun, and free from harsh chemicals will help it to stay soft and delicate for years to come.
Using natural products, like Adorable Baby’s line of baby skin care, will surely keep your baby’s skin healthy and protected. Plus, you can rest assured that you’re only putting safe ingredients on your baby.
