St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time for a little magic to fill the air! As parents, we know how special it is to create moments of wonder for our little ones. Why not make St. Patrick’s Day extra memorable by setting up one of these sneaky leprechaun traps?
This imaginative tradition is sure to spark joy, excitement, and maybe even a bit of mischief in your home. (At least it’s not from your kids!) What better way to engage your kids than with a crafty project that combines creativity, teamwork, and a sprinkle of the luck of the Irish?
I’m always looking for ways to combine learning with fun. Crafting a leprechaun trap offers a wonderful opportunity to teach kids about creativity, problem-solving, and planning while spending quality time together. Whether your child is in preschool or elementary school, everyone can get involved in the excitement!
How can you make creating a leprechaun trap special for your kids?
Creating a leprechaun trap with your kids is an opportunity to turn a simple craft into a memorable experience. Start by gathering your materials together, letting your children pick out what they think will be the perfect things to lure a sneaky leprechaun. Think shiny paper, glitter, or even some green fabric!
Encourage them to get creative with the design. It can be a cozy little house, a magical bridge, or a hidden treasure chest made from a laundry basket. As you build together make this time a playful adventure by, telling stories about the sneaky leprechaun and how he loves shiny things.
When it’s all set, the anticipation of seeing if the leprechaun will leave a surprise behind will make the night before St. Patrick’s Day feel extra special, and your kids will treasure the memories of working together to “catch” him!
What can my kids learn by making a leprechaun trap?
Making a leprechaun trap is a fun way for your kids to learn a variety of valuable skills while enjoying a bit of Irish magic. As they gather materials, plan the design, and build the trap, they’re practicing creativity and problem-solving. They’ll learn how to think critically about what would attract a sneaky leprechaun, and how to come up with clever ways to “trap” him.
This project also helps develop fine motor skills as they cut, glue, and build their designs. Most importantly, it’s a lesson in teamwork and patience, as they work together to bring their idea to life.
One of my favorite underrated lessons for them to learn is that even if the leprechaun escapes, they’ll learn that sometimes the fun is in the process, not just the outcome. It’s a perfect combination of learning and fun that will make them feel proud of their hard work all while building their character.

Top items to have when crafting leprechaun traps:
- Construction Paper – Green, gold, and rainbow colors for building the trap and adding decorative details.
- Glitter – Gold glitter to create that magical touch, perfect for mimicking the leprechaun’s treasure. (The tagged on is extra chunky and holographic! Perfect for St. Patricks Day.)
- Pipe Cleaners – These are great for creating handles, ladders, or other fun elements in the trap design.
- Stickers – Shamrocks, leprechaun faces, or other St. Patrick’s Day-themed stickers to decorate the trap.
- Gold Coins or Chocolate Coins – These make the perfect bait to lure the leprechaun into the trap!
- Cardboard or Shoe Boxes – To form the structure of the trap; they’re sturdy and easy to work with.
- Scissors, Glue, and Tape – Essential for cutting and securing everything together.
- Paint or Markers – For adding colorful designs, messages, or other creative touches. (These Paint Pens are a super cool idea too! Especially for a bit less of a mess!)

- Recyclable Boxes in any shape, size or color– You can decide how big or small you want your trap and can cover them to get the colors you’d like.

Rainbow Tunnel

These rainbow stairs lead up to a sequins rainbow tunnel. Once the leprechaun realizes that the gold is pretend, he will fall right in the hole!
Fallen Trap

This trap uses a decorated cardboard box with gold hidden under it. Once the leprechaun goes under the box looking for gold, the box will fall on him and trap him.
Fool’s Gold

Follow the gold pipe cleaner ladder through the rainbow tunnel. This will lead them to the pot of gold!
Pre-Made Kit

This leprechaun trap was bought as a pre-made kit from Amazon. The rainbow trail lets the leprechaun follow the gold coins to the rainbow stairs. As he searches for more gold he’ll be trapped!
Free Leprechaun Snacks

A hungry leprechaun will love a sweet treat trail to their gold! Using any kind of box will work great for this project. Don’t forget to share your littles yummy snacks.
Under an Hour Trap

I love a unique spin on a leprechaun trap and this is it! Grab a bug catcher and either paint it, cover it in paper or ribbon to make it St. Patricks Day themed. (You can reuse this plastic one for actual bug catching which is extra fun!)
While the example I shared is plastic, you can look for a wooden one if you prefer. You don’t need to worry about recreating a box or making an opening with this style.
Free Gold Trap

Amazon boxes no more! They are Free Gold Leprechaun traps now. Another idea for building a ladder is by using popsicle sticks that will lead your mischievous friend to their gold and down into the trap.
Cereal Box Trap

Let’s enjoy those lucky charms and then reuse the box as a trap. Now this one is even sneakier if you ask me. Your leprechaun will think they’re headed to a magical forest with gold AND free breakfast!
This trap will be an easy transformation and budget friendly. most of the decorating is already done for you!
The Tricky Trash Can

A mini trash can may sound like a weird choice but it’s quite perfect of a choice. Your littles can set up the ladder to where the leprechaun tries to grab the gold on top but oopsies, the trash can opens and he falls.
Will he be able to escape? You’ll find out in the morning!
Leprechaun Rainbow Slide

Grab an extra hat from the store and turn it into a trap. Now only is this super cute but it’s super easy. You’ll be able to create a giant leprechaun trap with your littles and focus on the decoration around it.
Don’t forget the ladder leading to a rainbow slide. That is my favorite part and I bet it will be theirs too.
Large Box of Mischief

Are you looking to go big or go home? This is the one! Using the sides of the box will give you some extra height. Your kids will love the idea that with higher walls, it will be harder for them to escape.
Disguised Pot of Gold

After building your popsicle stick leprechaun trap, switch up the traditional gold coins for some gold pom poms and sequins. Talk to your kids about their thoughts on using these and if they think the silly leprechaun will fall for your sneaky trick!
Repurposed Piñata

Have you see those mini piñatas? I think using them on your leprechaun trap is a great idea! This example shows smart ways of repurposing what you have on hand such as metal containers.
Cozy Leprechaun Trap

A small box (such as oatmeal, cornbread, even baking powder) can be used to create a great trap. If you are looking for a trap your littles can mostly do on their own, keeping it smaller is a smart option.
Rainbow Path

Handmade paper stairs leading to a rainbow paper path… leading to gold under a rainbow? This trap is sure to attract your little leprechaun friend!
Drop Down Trap

This is a classic trap with a twist. Another rainbow path with golden features to make it appealing. Your littles can decorate a box and hold it up with a stick. Don’t forget the string that will pull it all down together.
Popsicle Sticks Trap

Another popsicle stick idea but with this example, turn it into a box! Stuffy some treats in to lead a little leprechaun right for those goodies. Let your kids choose what fun items they’d like to give the leprechaun.
Coffee Container to Trick the Leprechaun

Do you have a leftover coffee container? Any round tall container would work for this. It’s like a pool filled with goodies but it’s a trap! Don’t forget a tall ladder so the leprechaun can get trapped!
Hat Trap

Instead of a store bought hat, turn this into a multi-step craft by creating an awesome St. Patricks Day hat. Once that hat is crafted, put it on a paper or cardboard to build the rest of the trap around it.
Decorated Treasure Box

Mini treasure boxes are a fantastic base when looking for a simple way to make a leprechaun trap. Your littles can paint this however they’d like and you can either leave it like that or add more to the surrounding area to make it extra magical.
Earthy Tricky Trap

Trick the trickster by making the tap look a little on the wilderness side. A hanging pot a gold is a brilliant way to call out their mischievous friend.
Leprechaun Hideout

A silly leprechaun is looking for gold and to hide in case anyone sees him. A small hideout is a good option that your kids will have a blast decorating. Bring out the green paper, popsicle sticks, gold coins and stickers of course!
High Rise Trap

Who says NYC has the best high rises? I think it can be your house this year… at least for a St. Patricks Leprechaun! Trap them in style with a tall box aka building. Tell your kids it’s time to build the leprechaun what they think is a mansion!
Garden or Leprechaun Trap?

This project is one of my favorites because it has more than one purpose and can be left out even longer than just overnight. Create a lovely garden trap. Creating a mythical story will be the cherry on top while crafting!
Rainbow Ladder Madness

This ladder is one of my favorites! A rainbow ladder is extra fun when using pipe cleaner. All of the rainbows with the blue backyard and clouds really make this feel extra magical. There’s no limit when decorating your trap.
Walk Under the Rainbow

Talk about a cool rainbow! Using either cardboard or even a plastic cup will work perfectly. The mini ladder is adorable and just the right size for that silly leprechaun to come grab their gold.
