If you or someone in your family has sensitive skin, finding a good mild detergent is important for sensitive skin.
There are so many options out there, it’s hard to know which is best to choose. I have sorted through all of the green washed labels so that you don’t have to!
Let’s jump in to learn more about mild detergents and what is best for sensitive skin.
What is Mild Detergent?
These days there is a lot of marketing that makes it confusing to tell if what you are buying is actually what you think it is. If you or a family member has sensitive skin, you definitely understand the struggle.
In regular or non mild soaps there are chemical compounds called builders. These builders contain a chemical concoction that boosts the formula to remove stains, grease and dirt.
A mild detergent should not have these common builders:
- Phosphates
- Soda Ash/ Sodium Carbonate
- Sodium aluminosilicates
- Sodium Silicate
- Citric Acid
These ingredients can be harmful, especially to those with sensitive skin. If the detergent you are considering contains these ingredients you may want to keep looking.
What are the Benefits of Using Mild Detergents?
Mild detergents are great to use even if you do not have sensitive skin. Regular detergents can remove the natural oils and nutrients your skin needs.
For people with sensitive skin, using a mild detergent is an absolute must. The ingredients in regular detergents can flare up rashes and skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
Mild detergents do not contain the irritants that regular detergents do.
What are the Requirements of a Mild Detergent?
Okay, so now we know that mild detergents are the way to go, but how do we know what is technically a mild detergent?
Let’s walk through how to tell:
- Must have a pH level lower than 8
- Does not contain bleach
- Does not contain ingredients that are builders
- Does not contain ammonia
- Does not contain other common toxins
Why Would You Need Mild Detergents?
Why would someone need to use a mild detergent? There is nothing wrong with using mild detergents in general, but many people use them due to skin sensitivity.
Here are a few reasons for needing to use a mild detergent:
- For baby/toddler clothes
- Skin condition like eczema or psoriasis
- Sensitive skin
- Allergies to other detergents
- Wanting to keep more of the natural oils and nutrients
Keep in mind, you don’t have to have a reason for using a mild detergent. Just wanting to use something better for your skin is enough.
What are the Best Uses for Mild Detergents?
Mild detergents can be used just as you would a regular detergent. The difference is that they are easier on your body and skin.
What is the Difference Between Detergents and Soap?
You might be asking yourself, what is the difference between detergents and soap? Knowing the difference can be very beneficial when looking for a mild cleaning agent.
Chemically speaking, soap and detergents are similar. Both soap and detergents contain something called surfactants, which is great for cleaning grime and grease when put in water.
When being made, soaps and detergents are both mixed with a lipid substance, soaps are mixed with more natural fats (animal fat or vegetable oil), where detergents are mixed with man made or synthetic substances (like petroleum).
